FAQs

Getting started

How do I set up my first cat profile in MyCats?

Adding your first cat is as easy as clicking the “plus” icon on the right of the section titled “Your cats.” From there, you’ll be able to add basic details about your cat like their name, birthday, adoption date, and more, in addition to more detailed information about their personality, play preferences, food preferences, and health.

Can I track multiple cats using one account?

Yes, MyCats is designed for households with multiple cats. Because many cats are happier when they have other feline companions, we made MyCats with the goal of making it easier to manage multiple cats at the same time, without forgetting anything important about any of them.

Is MyCats free to use? What features require a subscription?

MyCats is free to use with all features available for anyone with an iOS device. Our goal is to ensure the core functionality remains accessible at no cost. In the future, we plan to expand our paid offerings for those who especially enjoy using the app and want additional advanced features.

Features and functionality

How does MyCats help me track my cat's health and wellness?

MyCats provides comprehensive cat health tracking through easy-to-use features designed specifically for cat care. The app can be used to record everything from behavioral enrichment activities (play, socialization, training) to ongoing care and maintenance (nail trimming, grooming, teeth brushing) to health events and concerns (medication, illness, vet visits).

Can MyCats remind me when my pet needs medication or care routines?

While MyCats is currently focused on manual tracking of cat care and activities, we’re actively developing additional tools to help make the process more automatic and easy, like reminders, schedules, and more.

How do I log and track enrichment activities for my pet?

Tracking enrichment activities in MyCats is simple and intuitive. From the home page, tap the calendar button at the bottom of the screen; the following menu will appear where you can select the activity type (Care, Concern, Enrichment, Milestone).

Will MyCats help me remember important dates like my pet's birthday or adoption anniversary?

MyCats offers the ability to log these special occasions through a Milestone event, where you can add photo memories, notes, and other details. We’re also actively developing new features that will help remind you of these events when they’re coming up, so you can plan accordingly.

How does tracking enrichment activities prevent behavioral problems in cats?

Tracking a cat’s level of enrichment and activity in MyCats can prevent behavioral problems by ensuring they receive the right amount of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Without this, cats become stressed. This can result in behaviors like aggression toward other people or animals, inappropriate scratching (e.g. scratching furniture), fearfulness, and more. MyCats helps you keep track of how often you’re providing beneficial activity to your cats to prevent such problems from occurring.

Data, privacy, and sharing

Who can access my pet's information? Can I share profiles with my vet or pet sitter?

Your cat’s information is stored locally on your device only. You can choose to share your cat’s profile with anyone you choose via the “Share profile” button on your cat’s profile page. This will export your cat’s information into an easy-to-read PDF that can be texted, emailed, or used as you see fit.

I care for my pets along with other people in my household. Can we all use MyCats to collaborate together?

At this time, MyCats is only available on each personal device individually. We understand how important collaboration is for sharing pet care responsibilities within a household or group of caretakers, and so we’re actively developing features to allow family members or others to sync and collaborate through shared profiles and events.

Is my pet's health data backed up? What happens if I lose my phone?

Currently, MyCats stores all your pet data locally on your device for maximum privacy and performance. This means your information is secure on your phone, but not automatically backed up to the cloud. Because of this, we recommend regularly backing up your iPhone through iCloud to protect your pet’s data. In a future update, we plan to roll out iCloud syncing automatically, which will provide cross-device syncing and automatic backups.

Does MyCats work offline? Do I need internet access to log activities?

MyCats works completely offline, allowing you to log activities, health data, and access your pet’s information anytime and anywhere, even without an internet connection. This offline functionality makes MyCats perfect for use at home or on the go.

For fosters and shelters

How can MyCats help me manage multiple foster animals?

MyCats streamlines fostering by allowing you to create detailed profiles for each cat in your care and as often as that changes. You can track each cat’s individual needs, routines, and activities, from play habits to behavioral concerns and food preferences.

Can I share a cat's complete profile with their new adoptive family? Can I transfer it to their MyCats app?

MyCats allows you to export a detailed PDF report of a pet’s profile to send to adopters, providing them with valuable information about the cat’s preferences, routines, health, and behavior. (The process of matching an adoptive family with the right cat for their lifestyle is crucial, and using the cat’s profile as a tool to do this is a great strategy!) While we don’t yet support direct profile transfers between users, we plan to develop this capability for future releases.
